What’s more satisfying than solving hard riddles? Maybe stumping friends with a few easy riddles or testing your smarts with logic puzzles. The truth is that riddles have been captivating the human imagination since the dawn of civilization, with some of the world’s most popular riddles dating back to the fifth century B.C. But there’s one recent riddle vexing the internet that could only be a product of the modern world, and we have the “a man steals $100 from a shop” riddle answer. Let’s have a look, shall we?

“A man steals $100 from a shop” riddle

“A man steals a $100 bill from a shop. He then uses that $100 bill to buy $70 worth of goods. The shop owner hands him back $30 in change. How much money did the shop owner lose?”

What you’re thinking

Seeing all those numbers being bandied about, you might assume this seemingly short riddle requires some lengthier form of calculation. Indeed, the shop owner has lost $100 right off the bat, but they get that $100 bill back almost immediately.

Of the $100 stolen from him, the shopkeeper keeps only $70, handing back $30 to the thief. Because this transaction results in the shop owner ending up with $30 less in the cash register, you might be thinking that the answer is $30. Or is it the $70 in merchandise that the shopkeeper will have to replace?

Let’s not forget that when all is said and done, the thief walks away with $70 worth of goods. So you might be thinking that the shop owner is down the original $100 plus that $70 worth of goods, adding up to a total loss of $170. Or perhaps it’s that the shop owner is down the original $100 bill plus the $30 in change he handed over at the end? It could also certainly appear that the shop owner has lost a total of $200, which is the sum of the original $100 bill plus the $70 in merchandise and the $30 he handed to the thief as change.

Like all the best math riddles, the answer to this one is not what it seems. In fact, when you get right down to it, it might not even qualify as a math riddle. Or it might be the simplest math riddle ever.

The answer

What’s the “man steals $100 from a shop” riddle answer? He has lost $100. It’s that simple. If a man walks into a shop, sidles over to the cash register and, unbeknownst to the shop owner, manages to extract a $100 bill, that’s precisely what the shop owner has lost. Yes, it’s a brain teaser, but there’s no actual math calculation required!

The explanation

While the thief goes on to take $70 worth of merchandise, he pays for it with an actual $100 bill, upon which the shop owner hands the thief back $30 in change. The thief has converted his $100 haul into $70 of merchandise and $30 in change, and that is precisely what the shop owner has lost.

To put it in the simplest of terms, if a man steals $100 from a shop, then that is exactly the amount he has stolen and exactly what the shop owner has lost. Whatever happens after that is nothing more than a bit of “shuffling about” of that same $100.

Tired of thinking about numbers at this point? Challenge yourself to one of these “what am I?” riddles.

Green Glass Door Riddle: Try to Solve the Classic Riddle https://www.rd.com/article/green-glass-door-riddle/ https://www.rd.com/article/green-glass-door-riddle/#respond Fri, 15 Sep 2023 09:00:20 +0000 https://www.rd.com/?p=1859655 What's allowed through the green glass door? Riddles offer a playful challenge to make sense of the seemingly nonsensical. And whether we’re talking hard riddles or easy riddles, we humans tend to eat ’em up. That’s because our brains are hard-wired to identify patterns in whatever the world throws at us, which can often seem quite random. The “green glass door” riddle is a classic example that remains popular because it’s good fun for both kids and adults at parties or in the classroom. Moreover, it lends itself to virtually endless variationsin other words, the “green glass door” riddle never gets old.

Unlike the all-time favorite “what am I? riddles,” the “green glass door” riddle asks you to consider not what something is but rather what a whole litany of things have in common. The object of the “green glass door” riddle is for the participants to identify what can be brought through the doorand what is not allowed.

To get a flavor for the riddle, start your creative engines. Imagine a world where there’s no internet, and yet you can still use Google. Cell phones are all the rage, but tablets are verboten. There are books, but no paper, and for that matter, no writers. That is how life is beyond the metaphorical “green glass door,” where lots of things simply are not permissible. Oh, and the thing about the green glass door is that although it’s green, it could also be yellow, but never red or blue.Confused? Here’s how to play.

How to play the “green glass door” riddle

“There’s a green glass door, and some things can go through it, and some things cannot,” says the riddler. The riddler then offers up a pair of something that establishes the pattern. The pair is related in some obvious way, but only one thing in each pair meets the green glass door standard. The riddler can then offer up more pairs as clues. Then, it’s up to the players to figure out what that standard is.

“Green glass door” riddle examples

  • “There’s a green glass door, and you can come through it with a carton of eggs, but not with a box of doughnuts.”
  • “There’s a green glass door, and you can come through it with a gallon of skim milk, but not a quart of the stuff.”
  • “Do you like houseplants? There’s a green glass door, and you can come through it with bamboo, but not jade, orchids, philodendron or ivy.”
  • “There’s a green glass door, and sadly, dogs and cats can’t gounless they’re still puppies and kittens.”
  • “There’s a green glass door, and under no circumstances can your pet bird go throughwith the notable exception of parrots and parakeets. But macaws? They’re a no. Same with doves and canaries.”

If you’re a participant, and you think you know the solution, pipe up! Just remember to express it in the same form as the riddle itself. For example, you might say, “Aha! So toddlers can come through, but not babies?” That way, if there are multiple participants, the game can continue even after one of you solves the riddle.

The hint

Before we give away the solution, here’s one hint: The key to solving the “green glass door” riddle can be found in all four of the words that make up the phrase “green glass door riddle.”

The solution

Did the hint give it away? What do the four words in “green glass door riddle” have in common? That would be the presence of double letters. If something is spelled with double letters, it can go through the green glass door. If there are no double letters in its name, then it can’t.

To review, you can bring a game of Scrabble through the green glass door, but not Monopoly. Likewise, the new and highly addictive online word game Connections is welcome, but Wordle, alas, is not.

The “green glass door” variations

One of the best things about the “green glass door” riddle is that it offers brain-teasing entertainment in any number of settings. It’s just a matter of tweaking the proceedings, including the consequences for wrong answers. For example, it could be used as a riddle for teens in a structured setting, such as a classroom. There, a wrong answer could eliminate the player who offered it (kind of like how a spelling bee works).

In a social setting, a wrong answer could require the player who offered it to perform a task of some sort. The type of task will, of course, depend upon the context. For example, if you’re playing with your workout buddies, a wrong answer might require a number of push-ups. In the context of a cocktail party, a wrong answer could come at the price of a dare.

Other solutions

The one downside of the game is that once everyone knows what it takes to get through the green glass door, it’s game over. However, another solution, so to speak, could be to appoint a new riddler to make up a new rule for getting through the metaphorical door. Like, only objects that require batteries (laptops but not desktops) or only words containing the letter “w” somewhere within.

Of course, when you’re out of new ideas, you can always break out these math riddles. Or challenge the group to answer a few logic puzzles or these animal trivia questions.

The post 14 Visual Brain Teasers and Puzzles That Will Leave You Stumped appeared first on Reader's Digest.

]]>
No, a visual puzzle isn’t just another fancy word for a jigsaw puzzlethough a jigsaw puzzle is a type of visual puzzle. The concept of visual puzzles is much broader than that.

This guide will introduce you to 14 different types of visual puzzles, explaining what they are, how to solve them, and how they’re good for your brain. Read on to learn more about visual brain teasers, then click on one of the links below to put your visual puzzles skills to the test.

What are visual puzzles?

A visual puzzle, also called a visual brain teaser, is any logic or reasoning problem that is expressed and solved using drawings and/or images.

However, even though they all have the visual component in common, not all visual puzzles work the same way. For example, a “spot the difference” game is one type of visual puzzle and a “find the hidden object” game is another type of visual puzzle. They both require the use of images, but you go about solving them using different methods.

Are visual puzzles good for your brain?

If challenging your mind with visual brain teasers and puzzles sounds like your idea of fun, then you’re in luckdoing visual puzzles is a great way to sharpen your logic and reasoning skills. According to a study published in the journal IRSN Neurology, solving visual puzzles requires “nonverbal reasoning and the ability to analyze and synthesize abstract visual stimuli,” so by doing visual brain teasers like the various kinds in this list, you’re sharpening those skills. Think of it as a workout for your brain!

1. Droodles

Spider doing handstand

In the 1950s, humor writer Roger Price became famous for creating a new type of visual puzzle called “Droodles.” These Droodles were cartoon-y line drawings of abstract images, and readers were asked to decipher the drawings’ intentionally absurd and LOL-worthy meanings, which Price would include beneath the drawing.

Brain benefits: This visual brain teaser exercises your abstract thinking skills and creativityand in truth, there’s no real “right” or “wrong” answer. It’s all about training your mind to see things in a different light, which can benefit your problem-solving skills.

Play Now

2. Spot the difference

spot the difference pictures

This visual brain teaser is a classic childhood game, so you’re probably already familiar with how this one works: Two nearly identical images are placed side by side, and your job is to spot the small, subtle differences between the two images. For example, maybe a dog’s spots are black in the first image, but brown in the second.

Brain benefits: This fun brain game helps you hone your attention to detail, since you have to zero in on all the minute details in order to spot the differences between the two images which, at first glance, probably look identical.

Play Now

3. Find the hidden object

Find the dancer among the flamingos puzzle next to solution image

You’ll have to look closely if you want to try one of these visual brain teasers! To play, you’ll be given a drawing that initially appears to be a normal-looking scene. But if you look closely, there are actually a bunch of random things (or just one) subtly hidden within the drawing that don’t belong there. You’ll be given a list of those hidden items, and it’ll be your job to hunt through the main drawing and find all of the hidden objects within it. For example, a green glove might be hiding amongst tree leaves so it blends in and you have to find it.

Brain benefits: Your attention to detail will be tested with this visual puzzleand probably your patience, too! Our brains naturally try to “fill in the gaps,” so to speak (the same way you can read what a misspelled word in a text is supposed to say), so completing this type of visual brain teaser requires you to slow down and look at items individually, rather than as a whole, to spot the hidden objects.

Play Now

4. What doesn’t belong?

Illustration of numbered bowling balls and pins on blue background

This visual brain teaser is all about finding the one image in a series of images that isn’t the same as the others. The problem isfinding the odd man out is not always obvious! For example, can you spot which bowling ball doesn’t belong in the above image? (Hint: Look at the size of the finger holes on each bowling ball.) That’s right, #4 has two thumb-sized holes, whereas the others only have one like they should, which is why it’s the one that doesn’t belong.

Brain benefits: Just like “spot the difference” and “find the hidden image” visual puzzles, doing these types of puzzles can help sharpen your attention to detail while encouraging you to think more critically about what you see.

Play Now

5. Rebus puzzles

Rebus puzzle with "travel" above a line and "cccccc" below the line

Rebus puzzles are visual brain teasers based on common words or phrases, and your job is to figure out the word or phrase by looking at the puzzle “image,” which is often a combination of words, numbers, and symbols arranged in such a way that they have a deeper meaning. If you deciphered that the above image means “travel overseas,” good job!

Brain benefits: Rebus puzzles challenge both the left and right areas of your brain by combining language skills with critical thinking/logic skills, plus a dash of creativity, which is why they’re so much fun (and so tricky!) to solve.

Play Now

6. Triangle puzzle

Inside of a triangle are four rows and three columns, creating a 12-part grid

This puzzle is all about seeing trianglesinside trianglesinside other triangles! Your goal is to see how many triangles you can count within this puzzle. The secret: Pay attention to how each smaller triangle is also part of a larger triangle, and how that larger triangle is part of an even larger one, and so on. Did you count 24?

Brain benefits: With this visual brain challenge, you’re training your noggin to see parts of a whole more clearly. It also helps you think more spatially since you have to “separate” each triangle from the rest in your mind in order to count it.

Play Now

7. Square puzzle

Grid square puzzle - 2 squares intersect larger 4x4 square, creating 24 subsections

Just like the triangle puzzle above, this visual brain teaser is all about seeing shapes inside other shapes inside other shapesit just uses squares instead of triangles. Your goal is to count how many squares, total, you can see in the image. If you didn’t count 40, go back and try again.

Brain benefits: You’ll have to challenge your brain to think spatially and spot how individual parts make up a whole in order to solve this puzzle.

Play Now

8. Movie puzzles

Romantic Movie Moments together to make one larger image

A movie puzzle is a type of visual puzzle that has a series of images or illustrations depicting different famous movie scenes and you have to name the movie title for each one based on the image alone.

Brain benefits: You might think the only benefit of a movie puzzle is showing off your pop culture IQ, but the truth is, these visual brain teasers help with memory and recall, too.

Play Now

9. Find the cat

find the cat among the bats hidden object puzzle

Don’t be fooled! These aren’t all bats in this drawing. There’s one cat hidden amongst them, but you’ll have to look closely to spot itjust like you would hunt through a “spot the difference” puzzle or a “find the hidden image” puzzle.

Brain benefits: If you want to improve your attention to detail, this visual puzzle can help, since you’ll need eagle eyes to spot the cat amongst all of these look-alike bats.

Play Now

10. Math puzzles

Math puzzle

Don’t read the word “math” and panicthese are way more fun than your average math problems, since they’re visually focused! To play, you’ll need to “read” the image and turn it into a math problem. Each math puzzle looks different and some might require addition or subtraction, while others require multiplication, patterns, algebra, and more. The answer here is 2B (i.e. you need two yellow “B” balls to balance out the blue “D” ball).

Brain benefits: Just like normal math, these visual math puzzles test your critical thinking and reasoning skillsas well as your math abilities!

Play Now

11. Word puzzles

word worm

Visual word puzzles come in all different stylesfrom fill-in-the-blank word puzzles to word-decoding puzzles to finding words within other words and more. Even though they use letters and words, the spatial arrangement of these words and letters is integral to how the puzzle must be solved, which is why these are considered visual brain teasers, even though they’re word-based.

Brain benefits: Aside from giving your linguistic abilities a workout, visual word puzzles also engage your creative thinking and problem-solving muscles. Like the example above, some of them even challenge your progressive thinking skills, since each subsequent choice hinges on the one before it.

12. Sudoku puzzles

Easy sudoku puzzle

Sudoku puzzles consist of a grid of squares with nine columns and nine rows. Your goal is to have the numbers 1 through 9 in every column, in every row, and in every smaller box of nine (outlined by the bolder lines) without any duplicates. The key is to use process of elimination to figure out where each of the missing numbers can or can’t goand when you find a box that has only one possible answer, write it in! Then, keep looking for boxes where only one answer is possible until you can complete the grid.

Brain benefits: Since sudoku puzzles are completed using a strategic process of elimination, they give your logic, reasoning, and deduction skills a workout. Studies even say they can keep your brain “young” for longer!

13. Mazes

CuriousMazes-pp152

Mazes are one of the most common types of visual puzzles out there and many of us have been doing them since we were kids. The goal is to get from the starting point to the finish line without running into any dead ends. Some puzzles are simple, but other puzzles, like the one shown above, can be tricky to complete!

Brain benefits: You might not think a simple maze would challenge your brain in so many ways, but it does! Mazes test your spatial awareness, your decision-making skills, and even your memory.

14. Word searches

Mammals Word search

Word search puzzles are grids of seemingly disjointed letters that have a series of words hidden within them. To find and circle these hidden words, you might have to read top to bottom (or bottom to top), left to right (or right to left), or even diagonally. Youll be given a list of words to find within the word search, and itll be your job to scour the grid of letters to find and circle the hidden words.

Brain benefits: In addition to improving our brains problem-solving skills and ability to search for and recognize patterns, studies show that doing word searches can also help prevent or delay the onset of Alzheimers.

Lateral thinking puzzles are designed to truly test your creative thinking skills. With these challenging riddles that require lateral thinking, you have to step outside the box and consider all the factors that could contribute to an answer that isn’t so obvious. This gives you a chance to put on your detective hat to try to solve these fun mysteries. Lateral thinking requires plenty of creativity, which is a great exercise for your brain.

The difference between lateral and vertical thinking

Lateral thinking differs from vertical thinking completely. When you’re thinking vertically, you’re going straight for the obvious and accepted answer, but with lateral thinking, you might come up with an alternative solution to a riddle that requires you to piece things together to come up with a creative answer. Fun, right? It encourages you to use creativity because, for most lateral thinking puzzles, there are a few ways you could come up with a “correct” answer. These solutions are more about creativity than correctness.

When you’re working on a lateral thinking puzzle, you have to look at the scenario presented and try to find context clues. Sometimes the most correct answer is actually the most obvious, which is why you don’t land there immediately. Other times the correct answer is really hard to get to because you have to create the rest of the scenario yourself to get there. If this sounds a little confusing, it’s because it is! But we pulled together some lateral thinking puzzles that will demonstrate how these riddles work. The answers are also provided with explanations so you can understand how to get to the solution. Check them all out and then quiz your brain with these logic puzzles next.

1. A woman lives on the 30th floor and hates taking the stairs. Every day she takes the elevator down to the lobby floor to go to work. When she comes home from work, she takes the elevator to the 20th floor and walks the rest of the way up, except on days when it rains. Those days she takes the elevator all the way home. Social media nowadays isn’t just for catching up on your friends’ lives, liking every single photo of your cousin’s new puppy, or casually seeing what your ex is up to this year. It’s also a place where tricky brain games, difficult puzzles, and positively head-scratching riddles go viral! Like thousands of other people, you may have seen the “If I had 4 eggs” riddle come up on your screen during your scrolling downtime, and been totally stumped. But ponder no more! We’ve found the answer to this deceptively challenging viral riddle and laid it out below, along with a clear explanation. You’ll still have to figure it out yourself, but you can see if you’ve solved this egg riddle for the right answer. The next time you see the “If I had 4 eggs” riddle come up on your social media feed, you can challenge your friends and family to solve it as well.

RELATED: Mr. Smith Had 4 Daughters: Try to Solve the Viral Riddle

The riddle reads as follows:

If I had four eggs-
and a thief gave me three-
and my rooster laid five more-
how many eggs do I have?

This viral riddle requires careful reading! Your first thought may be that this is a simple math problem: Just add four, plus three, plus five, and you have 12 eggs! Wait, is that it? That seems too easy. Reading the riddle again, you might get stuck on the third line. Whoops! Roosters can’t lay eggs, so those five eggs are impossible. So is the answer seven eggs?

RELATED: Viral Riddles

Another popular answer to this riddle is one egg, but that answer is incorrect. We get to one egg by starting with four and then getting confused about the thief. Why would a thief give you three eggs? But that detailthat they’re a thiefis only there to throw you off: They don’t steal three of your eggs (giving the answer of one), they give them to you. So how do we get to the correct answer to this egg riddle?

The answer to the “If I had 4 eggs” riddle

The answer to this riddle is… three! I have three eggs. It all hinges on one very important word: If. If I had 4 eggs… implying that I don’t actually have them! That’s right, those first four eggs that we all took for granted are actually just an eggcellent fantasy. (Sorry). You have four imaginary eggs, but then a kindly thief happens by and gives you three. (Maybe the eggs came from their own chickens, rather than off the back of a truck?). Roosters can’t lay eggs, so those five are impossible, which leaves you with a total of three eggs! Sometimes, egg dreams do come true. Or close enough. Thanks, thief! Honestly, this whole thing casts some suspicion on your moral fiber. Maybe you should find some new friends who aren’t thieves. Or get some chickens of your own to keep your rooster company. Then, you can have all the eggs you want!

The Mr. Smith had four daughters riddle

If you’re on Facebook or other social media, you might have seen a riddle or two going around. During the long months of the pandemic, people were getting sick of television and turning to more old-fashioned fun to keep themselves from boredom: brain games, puzzles, and riddles! A few of the most tricky and confusing puzzles went viral on social media, like the Mr. Smith had four daughters riddle. Many, many people have been totally stumped by this riddle, and they want to know what it means. However, what a lot of those social media posts were missing is the number one thing you want when you’re trying to solve a riddlethe answer! Here, we’ve provided the riddle of Mr. Smith had four daughters in full, and the answer and an explanation too. You’ll still have to figure it out, but you can check to see if your reasoning was correct.

The riddle reads as follows:

Mr. Smith had four daughters. Each of his daughters has a brother.

How many children does Mr. Smith have?

This is a deceptively tricky riddle! If your first thought was that Mr. Smith has eight children, you’re not alone. Lots of people think that each daughter has one brother, making four daughters and four brothers = eight children. But that’s not quite right! The riddle looks like a math test on the front, but it’s actually a test of reading.

Answer to the Mr. Smith had four daughters riddle

The answer to the riddle is… five! Mr. Smith has five children. Each of his daughters had a brother, but they all shared the same brother. Therefore, four daughters plus one brother = five children in total. Grammar nerds might have gotten this one right before math lovers!

Of course, it’s called the “Mr. Smith had four daughters” riddle, meaning that you could interpret that past tense “had” in two ways: Firstly, that Mr. Smith had four daughters, i.e. that four daughters were born to him. Secondly, that Mr. Smith used to have four daughters, but now he has none, in which case the answer to how many children he had might be zero! However, the more commonly accepted interpretation is the first one, that Mr. Smith has four daughters and one son, making five children in total.

Who doesn’t love a good riddle (especially a good love riddle?) (Or a “Can you find the…” puzzle like this turtle one.) Well, this head-scratching riddle has gone viral. It’s now making the rounds on sites such as Reddit and Twitter. But can you solve it? While you’re at it, try to solve this riddle about Mr. Smith having four daughters.

Teresa’s daughter riddle

First, if you haven’t heard it, here is the Teresa’s daughter riddle:

“If Teresa’s daughter…” riddle answer

Let’s start by examining the second part of the Teresa riddle setup: “my daughter’s mother.” Hey ladies, imagine you have a daughter. (Perhaps you do.) Who is your daughter’s mother? You, of course!

Now, let’s substitute yourself in for that part of the question. So, it becomes, “If Teresa’s daughter is me, what am I to Teresa?” And now the answer is quite simple to parse outyou’re Teresa’s daughter.

Another way to think about it

What about for all the fellas out there? Let’s go through the same process. Who is your daughter’s mother? It’s likely your wife (although it could also be your ex, your girlfriend, or your partner).

For now, let’s use “wife” and make the same substitution as we did before. The question now becomes, “If Teresa’s daughter is my wife, what am I to Teresa.” And now the answer is that you’re Teresa’s son-in-law. (Although ex-son-in-law, daughter’s boyfriend, daughter’s ex-boyfriend, etc. work as well.)

It’s worth mentioning that these (albeit valid) answers are usually not included in the answer choices the way “Teresa’s daughter” is. So, that is the most popular and widely accepted answer.
