Brennan describes this book as a pitch for “astrology as a legitimate phenomenon.” It’s for both an academic and general audience and it demonstrates the ways astrological concepts both correspond to and help describe broad cultural events across history. Keep in mind it’s pretty thickaround 500 pages of rich, philosophical wonder. Richard Tarnas’ work influenced what’s now known as “archetypal” astrology and you can find a related website, Archetypal Explorer, that’s kind of like horoscope books in that it has an interactive interface for daily understanding of your own chart and the larger world’s.

10. Hellenistic Astrology: The Study of Fate and Fortune by Chris Brennan

A foundational introduction to ancient texts and techniques

“Hellenistic Astrology was my personal introductory text,” says drammeh about this nearly 700-page masterwork that’s an essential read for advanced astrologers and anyone else with a passion for the topic. drammeh recommends jumping around in this book and “not being overwhelmed by the overall page count.” The book is dense and intense, but you can still get into it as an advanced beginner if you have the basics down. Brennan learned Greek to translate ancient astrology works at Project Hindsight which was an inspiration for this work that took ten years to write. Before Hellenistic Astrology, there wasn’t a comprehensive primer on ancient astrology. Translating those ancient texts was so important because they contained techniques such as whole sign houses, the concept of sect, and timing techniques such as profections and zodiacal releasing. These ancient concepts are fascinating and gaining in popularity. Give this one a try if you want to know astrology’s vast history and how to put these techniques into practice. Why are words deleted from the dictionary?

The dictionary is a steadily enlarging volume, with thousands of new words being added each year. That’s because the English language constantly evolves and changes. Some new words arise from emerging and expanding disciplines. Others come from pop culture, which gives rise to slang that sometimes goes mainstream. Definitions also change and shift, so common words gain new meanings and nuances. On the flip side, there are also words that become obsolete. As a result, words get removed from the dictionary, though this doesn’t happen nearly as frequently as they’re added. Check out the process of adding a new word to the dictionary.

How many words are removed from the dictionary each year?

Very few words actually get removed from the dictionary. Instead, they’ll stay in but get categorized in a different way. The unabridged Collins English Dictionary uses labels like “obsolete,” “archaic,” or “old-fashioned” to designate the kind of words that are no longer in circulation. And the Oxford English Dictionary uses labels like “Now hist.” and “Obs.” to indicate that a word is historical or obsolete. There are plenty of bygone words that are no longer in use, but they’ll still show up in various dictionaries. Historians and scholars may need to know the origins and definitions of old, obscure words while doing research, so that’s why some out-of-date words remain. Believe it or not, some dictionaries also have “fake” entrieshere’s why.

Who decides which words to delete?

Lexicographers, aka dictionary editors, decide which words make it into the dictionaryand also which ones are ready for deletion. While adding a word to the dictionary is a rigorous process, it’s even more difficult for a word to get deleted. Lexicographers maintain and study vast language databases to keep up-to-date on the words in circulation across various mediums. Most words that are marked for deletion will remain in online dictionaries (or will be removed from one dictionary but remain in others) even after they’re cut from print editions. How do words get removed from the dictionary?

The Oxford English Dictionary covers the English language over the last 1,000 years, and it’s considered definitive and authoritative. However, there are many dictionaries that are reliable and trustworthy, and each has its own process for additions and removals. The American Heritage Dictionary, for example, uses the year 1755 as the cut-off year to indicate the difference between words that are obsolete versus archaic. What’s the difference? It defines an archaic word as one with “sporadic” print evidence of its use after 1755, and an obsolete word as one with “little or no” evidence of use since then. These are often the types of words that won’t make it into the print editions of dictionaries. Every time there’s a new print edition, inevitably some words will have to be cut so that it stays relevant and doesn’t become too unwieldy. Check out these 10 words that are almost extinct.

What are some recently deleted words?

Some words recently hit the chopping block in the Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionarymeaning they’re no longer included in the print edition. These include Vitamin G, snollygoster, hodad, frutescent, and sternforemost. Each of these terms has the necessary attribute of just not being useful or used anymore. Vitamin G used to be the term for what’s now known as riboflavin. Hodad comes from the 1960s and basically means a surfer poseur. While every era features these types of people who pretend to be who they’re not, this is an example of a term that fell from popular use. Sternforemost is no longer necessary to describe a ship moving backward; it’s an old nautical term from the 1800s. Frutescent, an adjective to describe being shrub-like, was also removed. How do dictionary additions and deletions reflect social changes?

The dictionary is the foundation of language, but that foundation reflects the perspective of those who have written it over the years. As a result, note scholars, the dictionary isn’t neutral. A 2019 petition with 30,000 signatures calls for the Oxford English Dictionary to remove sexist language and definitions, especially those entries under the word “woman.” In some dictionaries and on some websites, synonyms for woman include words like “bitch, piece, bit, mare, baggage, wench, petticoat, frail, and biddy.”

Are you a logophile, aka someone with a passion for words? If so, being a professional lexicographer may be the ideal job for you. Lexicographers get to decide which words make it into the dictionary, and they do so by reading widely across industries and disciplines. However, they also make decisions about which slang terms make it in. Lexicographer Kory Stamper calls the dictionary “a human document, constantly being compiled, proofread, and updated by actual, living, awkward people.”

How many words are added to the dictionary each year?

Dictionaries can sometimes get over 1,000 new words per year. So far, in 2019 the Merriam-Webster added over 600 in April and another 500+ in September. After lexicographers decide which words warrant inclusion, they write a new definition. Some existing words also gain additional meanings, and there are usually thousands of revisions. The dictionary is a constantly evolving work-in-progress, just like the language it describes and defines. For instance, the word “peak” recently went from being just a sharp, pointed end to also being something at the height of popularity. Occasionally fake words actually end up in the dictionary by mistake.

What are some new dictionary additions for 2020?

It’s been an unprecedented year in general, so it’s no surprise that lots of new terms have made their way into the dictionary. In April, Merriam-Webster added new words related to the isolated, hyper-hygienic world we’ve been living in due to the COVID-19 pandemic. New dictionary additions include “self-isolate,” “contactless,” and “forehead thermometer,” as well as abbreviations like “WFH” for working from home and “PPE” for personal protective equipment. In fact, their COVID-19related terms were added in addition to the usual slate of 535 new words and definitions. What if you have a slang word that’s perfect for the dictionary?

The show gets a makeover (in name only)

The Academy Awards ceremony has officially been known as the Oscars since 2013. That’s when producers rebranded the broadcast with the shorter name, a reference to the iconic golden statuette, to get away from the longer title. Previously, the live telecasts were termed according to their year, such as the 85th, 89th, or 92nd annual Academy Awards, which showrunner Neil Moran said at the time “keeps it mired in a somewhat musty way.” The shorter, sleeker title places the coveted golden Oscar statuette front and center. After all, it is the quintessential representative for the top achievements in film, decided upon by members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Why are the awards called Oscars?

The awards were created to “encourage excellence in all facets of motion picture production” way back in 1929 when the Academy had only been in existence for a few years. The official name of the honor is actually the “Academy Award of Merit,” but it’s much better known simply as the Oscar. The award shares the name with the golden statuette also named Oscar.

No one is exactly sure how the name started, but it took over as the official term for the statuette by 1939. According to one popular story, the Academy librarian took one look at the golden statue and said it looked just like her Uncle Oscarwho was presumably bald and had Art Decostyle cheekbones. The name stuck. The woman who reportedly came up with the term, Margaret Herrick, eventually became the Executive Director of the Academy. The Academy website also notes that columnist Sidney Skolsky, who claims to have coined the term, used it in print in 1934. And Walt Disney reportedly called the award his “little Oscar” during an acceptance speech in 1934, as well.

Why are the Oscars represented with a gold statuette?

The statuette’s design was meant to capture the majesty of the award. The first conception featured a knight, sword in hand, standing atop a film reel. The sculptor, George Stanley, created the three-dimensional, iconic, and instantly recognizable figure that you still see today. The sleek design features a male figure, undeniably muscular, who holds a sword with the point downward. The film reel was replaced with a black base, and the design originally had five facets to represent the Academy branches (actors, directors, producers, technicians, and writers). The statuette has a look of liquid gold, but its finish is 24-karat platenot solid gold. When was the first Academy Awards ceremony?

The Academy Awards started way back in 1929, and the first ceremony set the stage for a night filled with glamour and glitz. It took place in the Blossom Room at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood, and the winners were announced in advance, unlike the secret ballots that get revealed live on television nowadays. There were only two nominees for Best Actor, both of whom were nominated for two films apiece. The Best Actress category was similar with three nominees, but the winner, Janet Gaynor, was nominated for performances in three different films. The most coveted award, Best Picture, was called Outstanding Picture in 1929 before going through numerous changes until it officially became Best Picture in 1962. The first honor went to the silent film Wings, a big-budget epic set during World War l.

Who is “the Academy”?

When winners receive their statuette, they usually begin their acceptance speech with: “I’d like to thank the Academy.” But who, exactly, are they thanking? The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is made up of people who work in the film industry in Hollywood. The exact number of Academy members is a mystery, but there could be up to more than 9,000 if everyone invited accepts entry.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, 32 percent of Academy members are women, while 16 percent are people of color, as of 2019. Each year, the Academy invites notable professionals from the five branches across the industry, and in recent years, it has actively sought to add diversity to its ranks. There are strict guidelines for getting invited, including having multiple credits and years of work under your belt in technical categories. You’re also automatically invited if you happen to win or be nominated. It is an honor just to be nominated, after all!
